A topic that we have discussed in class that I find especially interesting is the overall concept of artificial intelligence. What stands out to me the most about AI is the way newsrooms are beginning to implement it into their daily work while still remaining ethical about the matter. AI can be a very helpful tool for everyday life in the journalism field. It is a sad reality that someone who does not use AI to speed up their job process may fall behind in comparison to their coworkers who use it effectively. I think it’s most important to use it in an ethical manner so it is not doing the work for you but rather aiding you in being more efficient.
In class, we talked about the concept of newsrooms using RAG to help with research and news gathering. RAG, which stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation, is a method that allows AI systems to extract relevant data from numerous sources before generating a response. This type of resource showcases an ethical way to use AI to make a company more productive, as opposed to people misusing it to write the entirety of their stories. AI can be a very effective tool, but it is most important that journalists keep their work authentic and do not rely entirely on it.  It is interesting to watch the ways that AI is unfolding in front of our eyes every day in this unpredictable age of digital media

Blog Post 1

Throughout the course of this semester, we have learned about camera angles and the cinematography aspect of journalism. I love general photography and cinematography, so this has been an especially interesting topic for me to explore. In class, we discussed how the camera does more than just record—it communicates power, emotion, and overall tone. We touched on the different impressions that each camera angle can create. Shooting at eye level often conveys equality between the viewer and the subject, while a low-angle shot can make the subject appear dominant. On the other hand, a high-angle shot can make the subject seem smaller or less powerful. Small choices like these help distinguish professional filmmaking from basic recording. As someone who wants to work in the broadcast industry, I found this information very helpful and plan to use it in my future packages. I find it fascinating how a simple change in camera height or direction can completely shift a viewer’s perception of a story.
We also covered the importance of subject placement, lighting, and shot types when framing a scene or interview. We learned that keeping your subject six to eight feet from a wall, using natural lighting, and consistently following the rule of thirds can help create a professional composition. Lighting is one of the most important elements when filming, as it helps set the mood and tone of your video. I plan to apply these techniques moving forward to enhance my digital storytelling abilities. My goals include lighting my frame effectively, experimenting with different shots (such as over-the-shoulder, establishing, and low-angle shots), and varying the distance of my shots (close, medium, and wide) to make my videos as dynamic and engaging as possible.
